Rangeland & Grassland

SunOne helps ranch owners and managers participate in the carbon markets. Different eligible project types include:

  • Improved Grazing Management: Ranchers can be eligible that are adopting practices to increase their forage and carbon stocks, such as light/moderate stocking rates, rotational grazing practices, and drought mitigation efforts.
  • Avoided Grassland Conversion: Ranch and grassland owners who are willing to put their land in permanent conservation status can be eligible if their land is threatened by agriculture, commercial, and residential development.

To participate ranches are required to submit formal documentation of their practices including a formal grazing plan that prescribes a sustainable forage-animal balance for each pasture, a grazing schedule or calendar, and a contingency plan for management under drought conditions. SunOne can help develop these documents with the ranch manager, and provides templates for the grazing narrative and grazing records.

Often soil sampling will be required to determine real carbon stocks. There are a variety of accurate methods to analysis soil carbon content and SunOne will organize and manage the sampling process on behalf of the land manager.
